october 26.

Text: Genesis 7:1-11:32

Speaker: Dr. Les Steele, SPU's Vice President for Academic Affairs

Big picture: In the Flood narrative, we read about God's initial "solution" to the corruption of the world--destruction. But in this same story, we discover the method of solving this problem is ultimately unsuccessful, because in the pages immediately following the destruction of the world, we find that the same corruption has crept back into the story. God promises not to destroy by water ever again. This sets the stage for what will be God's next and superior plan for the salvation of creation.

october 19.

Text: Genesis 4:1-6:22

Speaker: Gail Song Bantum, associate pastor at Quest Church in Seattle.

(check out her blog here).

Big picture:  In the story between the Garden and the Flood, we read about God's great disappointment in the corruption found within the human race.  Here we find the overarching theme that will dominate the rest of the story of Scripture: God is committed to the redemption of this creation, at all costs.

we fall down.

(but we get up).

A lot of people commented on this song after chapel this week, so we thought we'd post a link of the track by the original artist, Donnie McClurkin, in his recording of "We Fall Down."

Wasn't this song fitting for what Celeste spoke on this week?

imagine me.

Ladies and gentlemen, presenting the official music video of the song "Imagine Me" from last week's chapel service:

(artist: Kirk Franklin)

This is a good song to ponder before tomorrow's service, where we will be focusing on the concept of shame in our relationships with the Lord and with other people.

october 12.

Text: Genesis 2:4-3:24

Speaker: Celeste Cranston, director of SPU's Center for Biblical and Theological Education.
Celeste Cranston

Big picture: In chapter 2, the narrative transitions to the story of the beginning of the human family.  In God's vision for human life, we discover that Adam and Eve are "naked and without shame," indicating the openness and vulnerability for which we are created and for which we long.  It is a "nakedness" that includes our relationships with God, each other, and the whole created order.

october 5.

Text: Genesis 1:1-2:3
Dr. Spina

Speaker:  Dr. Frank Spina, SPU Professor of Old Testament

Big picture:  The beginning of the Christian story asserts that God is the creator and sustainer of all things, and that all things are created good.  This passage represents the more cosmic and universal aspects of Creation.

first week.

Hello SPU!

Welcome to the brand-new Chapel blog.  Through our blog, we envision giving you an opportunity to check out updates on our plans for each week's service, not to mention gaining access to outside links for all kinds of things: songs we are using in the service, artwork we've featured during worship, background and contact information for our weekly speakers, and outside resources we're using to plan and shape our services.

We welcome your comments and feedback.  This is a community where we want everyone to participate, not just the people who get up on stage every week.

We look forward to seeing you there for our first service on Tuesday, October 5!
